Starting Is One Phone Call
No referral needed, no forms before we talk. Here's exactly what happens between picking up the phone and sitting down with a clinician.
Call (888) 280-2585Admission to Bishop Health starts with one call to (888) 280-2585. On that call we listen to what's going on, verify your insurance for free, and schedule your intake. Most new patients have a first appointment within one to two weeks — faster when clinically urgent.
The Five Steps, Start to Finish
The First Call, Demystified
Expect 10–15 minutes. You'll be asked what brings you in, what treatment you've tried, your insurance, and your availability. Nothing is a test; "I don't know" is a fine answer.
A family member can make the call for someone else — we'll explain what we can and can't discuss, and how to get their consent in place.
What to Bring to Intake
Completed portal paperwork saves ~20 minutes; the front desk can help if it didn't get done.
Timing & Logistics
Typical wait: one to two weeks to a first appointment; interventional consults and hospital step-downs are prioritized.
Where: 100 Gannett Dr, Suite A — free parking at the door, fully accessible, a calm waiting room that rarely holds more than a few people.
Paperwork: sent through the secure portal — never printed forms on a clipboard in public. About our forms →
If We're Not the Right Fit, We'll Say So
Bishop Health treats mental health conditions as the primary concern. If your primary struggle is substance use, a different program will serve you better — and we'll connect you to it on the same call rather than admitting you to the wrong level of care.
Our Guardian Recovery sibling programs in Portland specialize in exactly that: Pine Tree Recovery Center (detox and residential) and Southern Maine Recovery (outpatient SUD treatment). Co-occurring conditions are evaluated case by case — many patients do belong here.
We also refer out when someone needs inpatient hospitalization, specialized eating-disorder care, or child/adolescent services we don't provide.
Admissions Questions, Answered
Can I start with therapy and add psychiatry later — or vice versa?
Yes. Your intake evaluation recommends a starting point, not a locked path — adding or adjusting services later happens inside the same record and team.
Can a family member handle admissions for someone who's struggling?
Absolutely — it's one of the most common ways care starts. We'll walk you through consent, what the first call covers, and how to make the handoff gentle.
Do you see anyone the same week?
When clinically urgent — a hospital step-down, rapidly worsening symptoms — we prioritize scheduling and can often arrange a first contact within days. Say so on the call; it changes how we book you.
What if I've been through intake evaluations before and dread another one?
Bring your records and say exactly that. We read what exists rather than making you re-tell everything, and the evaluation focuses on what hasn't worked — which is information, not failure.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes, within HIPAA's standard limits — we can't and won't share your information without your consent, except where the law requires (imminent safety risk, abuse reporting). We'll explain those limits plainly at intake.
What does the first appointment cost?
With in-network insurance, typically your specialist copay. You'll know your exact number after the free benefits check — before the appointment, not after.
