Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program in Maine

The same 12-week IOP curriculum — three-hour groups, individual therapy, and psychiatry — attended from home by secure video.

Virtual IOP scheduling is being confirmed for Maine — call to ask about current availability.

Bishop Health's virtual IOP delivers the same 12-week, nonrepetitive group curriculum as our in-person program — three-hour groups three to five days per week, plus individual therapy and psychiatry — attended from home by secure video. It's built for adults across Maine for whom distance or transportation is the barrier to structured care.

Who Virtual IOP Is For — and Who It Isn't

Virtual IOP fits when…

Your primary diagnosis is a mental health condition — depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder
Weekly therapy isn't enough right now, but you don't need round-the-clock care
Distance, transportation, or health keeps you from attending in person in South Portland
You have a private space and a reliable connection for three-hour video groups
You live in Maine

Virtual IOP is not the fit when…

Substance use is the primary concern. Our programs require a primary mental health diagnosis — a SUD-first program will serve you far better
You need medical detox, 24-hour supervision, or inpatient psychiatric care
You'd do better in the room — the in-person IOP runs the same curriculum in South Portland

If substance use comes first, start here instead:

Pine Tree Recovery Center — detox & residential, Portland
Southern Maine Recovery — residential recovery housing
Both are Guardian Recovery sister programs — one call and we'll connect you directly.

How Virtual Sessions Work

Groups meet live by secure video — the same clinicians and the same curriculum as on-site, joined from wherever you have privacy and a connection.

Individual therapy and psychiatry happen by video too, with in-person visits at 100 Gannett Drive available when clinically needed.

Step Up, Step Down

Virtual IOP sits in the same continuum: step up to PHP or the in-person IOP when more support helps, step down to outpatient care as things stabilize — same team, same record, no starting over.

Telehealth psychiatry and therapy continue after the program wherever you are in Maine.

For teens, see the Adolescent Virtual Program — evening groups, Monday through Thursday.

Virtual IOP Questions, Answered

Is virtual IOP available right now?

Scheduling for the virtual track is being confirmed for Maine. Call our admissions team to ask about current availability — and if virtual isn't running when you call, the same curriculum is available in person in South Portland.

Is virtual IOP the same program as the in-person IOP?

Same 12-week nonrepetitive curriculum, same three-hour group structure, same clinicians — attended live by secure video instead of in the group room. Your evaluation covers whether a virtual or in-person track fits your situation better.

What do I need to participate from home?

A private space where you can speak freely, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. We walk through the technical setup with you before your first group.

Do I ever need to come to the office?

Group sessions, individual therapy, and psychiatry can happen by video. Some situations call for an in-person visit at 100 Gannett Drive in South Portland — your care team will tell you when that's the case.

Who is the virtual track for?

Adults in Maine whose primary diagnosis is a mental health condition and for whom distance, transportation, or health makes attending in person the barrier — not the treatment itself.
