What to Expect at Bishop Health

The unknowns are often the hardest part. Here's your first visit, hour by hour — the building, the room, the questions, the people.

Your first Bishop Health appointment is a 60–90 minute evaluation with a psychiatric provider or therapist at our South Portland office. Expect unhurried conversation about your history and goals — not a rapid-fire questionnaire. You'll leave with a treatment plan, your next appointments booked, and clear costs.

Your First Visit, Hour by Hour

Before

Portal paperwork arrives after scheduling — do it at home in ~15 minutes, or come 20 minutes early and the front desk will help.

Arrival

Park free at the door, enter at Suite A. The waiting room is small and calm — you'll rarely wait with more than a few people, and never long.

The visit

60–90 minutes in a private office — what brought you here, what you've tried, what helped, what didn't, and what you want life to look like. Honest answers matter more than polished ones.

The plan

Your provider walks through their recommendation — therapy, medication, an interventional option, or a structured program — including why, and what the alternatives are.

Leaving

Next appointments booked before you leave, costs confirmed, portal access set up. If a different practice would serve you better, we say so and make the referral.

The Space Itself

Private consult offices with real daylight, a group room that looks more like a living room than a classroom, and treatment rooms designed for comfort — recliners, dimmable lights, blankets.

The whole office is wheelchair accessible, and the front desk team is the same few people every time — by your second visit, they know your name.

Photography throughout the site gives you a feel for the setting before you arrive.

Common First-Visit Worries

What if I cry, go blank, or can't explain myself?

All three happen in our offices every week, and none of them derails anything. Providers are practiced at carrying the conversation when you can't — showing up is the only part that's on you.

Will I be pushed onto medication?

No. You'll get an honest recommendation with reasoning and alternatives — including non-medication options like therapy and TMS — and the decision stays yours.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes — a partner, parent, or friend can join for any part of the visit you want them in, and wait comfortably for the parts you'd rather do alone.

What should I wear / how formal is it?

Come as you are. This is a comfortable outpatient office, not a hospital — sweatpants are as welcome as work clothes.

What happens after the first appointment?

You start the plan you agreed on — typically a first therapy session or medication follow-up within a week or two, with the portal and front desk keeping everything coordinated.
